Pastel Artwork FAQs

How are pastels protected from smudging?

Glassine paper is taped to the backing board temporarily protects a pastel artwork from smudging. Keep this glassine overlay on the work until it's framed. Make sure the glassine is flat and securely attached to the board. The artwork should not move under it.

When handling pastels without the glassine overlay, hold the work by the sides and avoid touching its surface.

How do we safely pack pastel artworks for shipping?

Protected with a glassine overlay, the work is placed between the rigid boards which make sure that the corners are unlikely to be damaged during the shipping.

How to frame pastels?

It's best to find a framer who has some experience framing pastels.

You can use a mat to create the border between the artwork and frame. This is particularly helpful with smaller works to avoid the shadow from the top of the frame on the top of the painting (if your frame is thick). Alternatively, you can choose to skip the mat and use spacers (the thin bars that don't let the glazing touch the surface of the pastel. The framer should be able to help you to make your choice.

Glazing can be glass or acrylic. Ask to see the samples. The best choice is the museum glass if you have a budget for it. It's the most clear and reflection free.

Are pastel artworks archival quality?

Absolutely! The pigments used in pastel colors are the same pigments used in any other medium. I use only top quality brands and archival materials in my work, which guarantees that it will last for a long time. In fact, the minimal amount of binder in the pastel medium helps the colors stay vibrant. Compare that to the old oil paintings where oil binder makes the whites more yellow overtime. In pastels, it's almost pure pigment!

Is the artwork sold framed?

No, all artworks and prints are SOLD UNFRAMED unless explicitly stated otherwise. The images of the framed art are provided to help you visualize how the art might look in an interior.

How large will the painting look on the wall?

The wall art size guide provided with each artwork will give you a quick idea. Use the given measurements of the artwork to get more accurate scale of the artwork within your interior.

Please note that the frame around the original artwork will add a few inches on each side. The final size will depend on whether you choose to frame the artwork with the mat and on the width of the frame.

How to prevent artwork from fading?

I use high quality color pigments in my art, which will keep their strength and vibrancy, if the artwork is not kept in the direct sunlight.
